Alex's Update Issue 41

Great Sydney Schools, Millers Point Social Housing, Barangaroo Changes, Surry Hills Eastern Distributor Ventilation Stack and Comment on Public Toilets

Over the weekend I visited Plunkett Street, Glenmore Road and Darlinghurst Public Schools, who all held fundraising and community events with Glenmore Road celebrating their 130th Birthday! Each school has hard working staff, engaged students and strong community supporters. Plunkett Street is holding an open day 10am Thursday to show the school to prospective students, details are HERE

My community meeting this Thursday evening will update social housing tenants on the progress of the Government’s review of Millers Point, Dawes Point, and The Rocks social housing. The meeting will also update the community on the campaigns to retain and properly maintain social housing in the area.  It’s at the Abraham Mott Hall from 5.30-7pm and I hope to have an update from the Minister to share with the community.  See the invitation HERE

I asked the Premier to relocate the Barangaroo Casino on land already approved for development if it proceeds. Packer wants the building on planned public open space, which is needed for the recreational needs of CBD residents, workers and visitors. Any changes to the approved concept plan must be subject to an open and transparent community impact assessment. My request is HERE

I also asked the planning and infrastructure minister to scale back expanding construction times on the site, which are now seven days a week, to give adjacent residents respite from noise. My letter is HERE

Land adjacent to the Surry Hills Eastern Distributor ventilation stack on the corner of South Dowling and Flinders streets remains an eyesore, attracting graffiti and rubbish, covered in weeds and surrounded by rusted wire fencing. Roads and Maritime Services proposed to develop the site in 2008 but nothing has been done and I asked the roads and ports minister to landscape and improve its amenity.

Looking for a public toilet? Comment on the draft City of Sydney Public Toilet Strategy before 30 September. Details: HERE
