Greenwich Opposes Government Liquor and Crimes Legislation

(30 January 2014, News Maker)

Alex Greenwich, Independent member for Sydney, has expressed his opposition to key aspects of the government’s plans to address alcohol fuelled violence including mandatory sentences and lockouts. Legislation was rushed through Parliament today without any consultation and normal parliamentary process was abandoned to prevent scrutiny of the legislation and time for debate.

    Hi Jean-Philippe
The State Government overrides councils in NSW and councils can only act within state laws. Now that the laws have passed, they might be able to be challenged in court if there were grounds, which would be expensive and take a long time…

    Dear Mr Greenwich,

I was wondering how the state government has authority to affect such a small area which seems to fall under the City of Sydney’s jurisdiction? Is there any possibility to challenge this rather undemocratic process before the Court?

    Best regards,
