I congratulate and commend the survivors of institutional child abuse who fought to expose wrongs through the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The Royal Commission confirmed cover-ups of horrific abuse and torture of children with perpetrators protected, particularly in out-of-home care and religious bodies.Read more

This has been another productive year working for the Sydney community to defend our amenity, the natural environment, fairness and vibrancy. Some of the issues I have pushed include better planning in The Bays Precinct, Moore Park protections, housing affordability, a plastic bag ban, a marine park for Sydney, new approaches to criminal justice and drug use, and better protections against building defects. Sometimes the wins get overshadowed by the ongoing struggles so it is always useful to look back on what we have achieved and here’s my short list of key wins from 2017: www.alexgreenwich.com/achievements_2017.

You can nominate women who have outstanding contributions in NSW to industry, communities and society for recognition at the 2018 International Women’s Day. Each MP nominates a woman in their electorate to acknowledge their contribution and I’m keen to hear of women in the Sydney electorate to recognise. Public nominations close 18 December HERE.

A number of constituents have contacted me distressed about the federal government’s ongoing cruel treatment of more than 800 refugees on Manus Island. Both the federal government and opposition have left hundreds of refugees in limbo and the closure of the detention centre exposes them to further risk. It will take a concerted community campaign directed to federal MPs to get a humanitarian response. There’s a great action list HERE.

Do you know a young person up to 29 years of age whose positive achievements deserve to be recognised? You could nominate them for public recognition, trophy and prize by 8 December HERE.

In Parliament I supported the government’s new anti-scalping laws. Resale websites use software to buy tickets to events in bulk and then resell them at massively inflated prices. They pay search engines to advertise so they come up at the top of searches. New laws ban the software and put a cap on the profit when tickets are resold and are a positive move to prevent consumers being ripped off. My speech is HERE.
(Debate, 18 October 2017, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)
I rise to make a brief contribution in support of the Fair Trading Amendment (Gift Cards and Ticket Scalping) Bill 2017, which introduces sensible measures to help prevent the scourge of online ticket scalping that is ripping everyday people off.Read more
