26 January

26 January

This Thursday 26 January is another opportunity to reflect on the historic injustices faced by First Nations people and to promote truth-telling, understanding, respect, healing and reconciliation. I continue to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart call for a First Nations Voice to Parliament, Truth and Treaty or Makaratta.

I encourage you to learn about the proposal > HERE and link up with this campaign to support the referendum later this year > HERE.

While many people feel a sense of patriotism and want to celebrate our national day, this should include recognising the place and contributions of First Nations people in our history, and being considerate of people who see the day as one of mourning. I support changing the date of Australia Day and welcome the federal government decision to allow the option of taking this holiday on another day > HERE.

The Yabun Festival celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is on Gadigal land at Victoria Park > HERE. The Nasara – Yarning South Sea Islander festival is at Pirrama Park > HERE. Sydney Australia Day events > HERE.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
