Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing

Last week in Parliament, I called for the government to improve housing affordability by building new social housing stock, legislating strong targets for affordable housing in redevelopment projects and allowing councils to levy developer contributions for affordable housing.

The situation in Sydney is serious, with buying a home increasingly out of reach and more than half of lower income households with a mortgage in housing stress. Many people have no choice but to rent, but renting affordability has also declined with rents now so high only one per cent of Sydney rental homes are within the means of the lowest income households, with none in the inner city.

Experts have provided a range of solutions but the government has focussed solely on releasing land for development.
