ARIA Awards

(Community Recognition Statement, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

On behalf of the Sydney electorate, I would like to commend the steps taken by the ARIA Awards to be more inclusive.

Public recognition in many industries has historically favoured men, and this continues despite many efforts to redress imbalance and promote equality. The recent decision to give a Best Artist award instead of best male or female artist will mean artists who are non-binary will be considered along with those who identify as male or female. It is simply not fair that they should be excluded and their talent ignored. This should also mean that female artists are recognised in the same category as male artists, instead of being seen as second-best.

While we have more work to do to be inclusive, it is inspiring to see yet another body moving to recognise excellence and great achievement wherever it occurs. I commend the ARIAs and music industry for this step towards inclusion and equality.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
