Last week I joined NSW Parliament colleagues Shayne Mallard from the Liberals, Penny Sharpe from Labor and Jenny Leong from the Greens to congratulate Victoria for outlawing LGBTQ+ conversions. LGBTQ+ conversion therapy is emotionally and psychologically damaging and has lifelong impacts. The new laws follow similar reforms in Queensland and the ACT and we know that the practice happens here in New South Wales but most stories go untold because it happens behind closed doors in an environment of shame and rejection.

We are calling on members of the community with lived experienced of conversion therapy to get in contact with us to share their stories so that we can work together to outlaw the practice here. We will review the Victorian legislation and ensure any reform protects LGBTQ+ people regardless of their background or upbringing from the trauma and torment of conversion therapy.
