Birth Certificate Reforms Commence
From Tuesday, trans and gender diverse people will be able to update the sex on their birth certificates without the need to undergo invasive surgery following commencement of the provisions of my passed Equality Bill. Adults will need to provide a statutory declaration and a supporting statement from someone they know, while anyone under 18 will need parental support. In response to my question in Parliament, the minister said that frontline staff have had training to help applicants, there is a process to help applications also applying for a change of name, and fees will be waived for people experiencing financial hardship or who are vulnerable. A digital application form will be available at nsw.gov.au/change-of-sex and a paper-based application will also be available to download or from Service NSW.
Other provisions in my Equality Bill will also commence including access to parentage orders for children born out of overseas commercial surrogacy and removal of offences for living off the earnings of a sex worker.
