The government introduced a new framework to allow businesses to come together and fund place making projects in their precinct like festivals, street activation and street art. Community Improvement Districts already operate in the inner city but have had to fund their projects through council and government grants. The new framework provides processes to ensure there is widespread business and residential support for projects and then for levies on business landowners to fund them. In response to concerns I raised on behalf of the City of Sydney about consultation, the government promised to work closely with councils on the regulations and supported my amendments to protect councils and business operators from having their private information shared with other businesses. Transport for NSW will be the overarching body administering the new system.
