Greenwich calls for Sydney Harbour to be declared a Marine Park

Alex Greenwich, the Independent Member for Sydney, has called on the government to declare Sydney Harbour a Marine Park that includes sanctuary zones to protect its marine environment for future generations.

Mr Greenwich said:

“The government has a historic opportunity to protect one of Australia’s most internationally recognised icons. Sydney Harbour has more fish species than the Mediterranean Sea, New Zealand and the United Kingdom”.

“The Harbour faces a growing number of threats including marine debris and variable water quality. Declaring it a marine park would allow all activities, except mining, to continue while creating sanctuary zones for marine life to thrive”.

In response to Mr Greenwich’s question today the Minister for Primary Industries announced the government now would consult with experts and stakeholders on ways protect Sydney Harbour (full response available soon).

Mr Greenwich will work with the government, harbourside Councils and MPs, and the National Parks Association to progress this initiative.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
