(Community Recognition Statement, 10 August 2022, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)
On behalf of the Sydney electorate, I wish to recognise the continued commitment of Canice's Kitchen at St Canice's Catholic Church in Elizabeth Bay to responding to people in need in our community. Throughout the pandemic the support and community service of Canice's Kitchen has continued to grow. Guests have enjoyed and relied on access to fresh food, health support, employment training, legal advice and an extensive library. During the extreme wet weather, Canice's Kitchen adapted to the needs of people experiencing homelessness, opening their doors early to provide hot showers, dry clothes, shelter and hot drinks. Canice's Kitchen's newest services include unlimited free wi-fi, making it easier for guests to access support and maintain connections with friends and family. The Health and Wellness Team of two counsellors, a social worker and life coach are onsite to support visitors every week and the new community pantry makes donations of non-perishable food items available six days a week so guests can take whatever they need. These additions recognise the community's evolving needs. I commend the passionate and committed team of workers, donors and volunteers of Canice's Kitchen who provide practical support and friendship to everyone who visits.
