City COVID Support
My Private Members Statement in Parliament reported on the range and extent of support from the City of Sydney for vulnerable people and individuals during the COVID restrictions and vaccination campaign.
Under Lord Mayor Clover Moore, the council provided significant financial subsidies, grants and practical help for community organisations, creatives, small businesses and for vulnerable groups including free reusable masks and food parcels.
I’m thankful that the City used these resources to help during the pandemic, with movement and gathering restrictions that have stretched relationships and undermined mental health. This action helped reduce the impact of lost livelihoods and income, homes, health or even lives.
The City’s emphasis on providing open and green space has also been a vital resource as the pandemic reminded us about the vital role of public spaces. Since 2004 the council has added more than 24 hectares of new open space in our heavily built-up inner city.
Experience suggests that there may be more waves of illness and restrictions ahead with COVID-19, along with repeat vaccinations. I trust that City of Sydney will continue to act decisively to protect residents, businesses and communities into the future. My speech > HERE.
