City of Sydney Supporting Vulnerable Communities

City of Sydney Supporting Vulnerable Communities

(Community Recognition Statement, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

On behalf of the Sydney Electorate I commend the City of Sydney for the extensive support for vulnerable communities during the pandemic.

The City of Sydney has worked closely with social service providers to help disadvantaged people and groups who have been disproportionally impacted by restrictions due to a lack of affordable housing, food security and adequate federal income support.

The City of Sydney has given financial support to food services OzHarvest, Foodbank and SecondBite to ensure no one goes hungry. Council funded emergency quick response grants to help community organisations meet increased need.

For non-residents and asylum seekers experiencing homelessness, the City worked to secure emergency accommodation through the Haymarket Foundation and the Department of Communities and Justice.

In conjunction with Sydney Local Health District, the City has increased vaccination clinics and outreach services providing information, testing, and critical supplies such as masks and food for local First Nations communities, social housing tenants and isolated people.

I congratulate and thank the City of Sydney under Lord Mayor Clover Moore's leadership for this strong commitment to care for vulnerable communities throughout the pandemic.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
