Gordon Stevenson and Peter Fraser Marriage

Gordon Stevenson and Peter Fraser Marriage

(Community Recognition Statement, 2 July 2013, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

On behalf of the Sydney electorate I congratulate Gordon Stevenson and Peter Fraser, the first same-sex couple to marry in the United Kingdom consulate in Sydney last week.

The couple of 19 years were joined by family and friends, and advocates from Australian Marriage Equality. The ceremony was conducted by British Consul General Nick McInnes with the approval of Federal Attorney-General George Brandis.

Following the ceremony Peter said:
"While I feel proud and privileged to be the first of what I am sure will be many couples to marry here, I am also conscious that now we've left the consulate and gone outside, our marriage will not be recognised under Australian law. I hope that soon all Australians will be able to marry the person they love."

That is a sentiment that many of my constituents share.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
