Indigenous Kids in Care

Indigenous Kids in Care

The Family Matters Report 2020 shows that Indigenous children continue to be removed from family and kin at disproportionate rates – disrupting their connection to community and culture. A staggering 81 per cent (16,287) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care are living permanently away from their birth parents until the age of 18 years. The report: HERE.

In Parliament, I’ve asked the minister for action to address this to meet the Closing the Gap commitment of a 45 per cent reduction in the number of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care by 2031. We urgently need an Aboriginal Child Protection Commission to ensure self-determination for Aboriginal families at risk: > HERE.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
