Thursday was a historic day for LGBTI reform with the lower House passing laws to remove prior criminal convictions for consensual homosexual acts and Greens MLC Dr Mehreen Faruqi and I introducing legislation to remove the requirement for married trans* people to divorce in order to update their birth certificate. I tabled a copy of  Peter de Waals’s ‘Unfit for Publication’ which details Australia’s buggery and sodomy trials from 1727 to 1930, and committed to further trans* law reform including to remove the need for a person to undergo sex affirmation surgery to update the sex on their birth certificate.
