LGBTI Reform

Thursday was a historic day for LGBTI reform with the lower House passing laws to remove prior criminal convictions for consensual homosexual acts and Greens MLC Dr Mehreen Faruqi and I introducing legislation to remove the requirement for married trans* people to divorce in order to update their birth certificate. I tabled a copy of  Peter de Waals’s ‘Unfit for Publication’ which details Australia’s buggery and sodomy trials from 1727 to 1930, and committed to further trans* law reform including to remove the need for a person to undergo sex affirmation surgery to update the sex on their birth certificate. My speech in the historic homosexual offences bill is HERE and my speech on ending forced trans* divorce is HERE. I was honoured to share the day with colleagues and inspiring members of the LGBTI community.
