LGBTIQ Hate Crimes

LGBTIQ Hate Crimes

Since I was elected, I pursued the need for a Special Commission of Inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes and the commission was established under the former Coalition government. A report was handed down late last year with damning findings about the way suspected homicides motivated by hate and prejudice were dealt with between 1970 and 2010. Homophobia, transphobia and indifference among police left many crimes ignored or barely investigated. For many, justice was never delivered and trauma for families, loved ones and the wider LGBTIQA+ community endured.

I welcome the Labor government’s decision to agree to all recommendations which include fresh investigations and inquests to certain deaths, a DNA database that is regularly monitored, and additional police training on LGBTIQ matters.

I hope this will help heal the deep hurt families and the LGBTIQA+ people experienced and that it provides a catalyst for addressing remaining systemic discrimination – something that allowed these failures to have occurred in the first place. My question in Parliament > HERE.
