LGBTIQA+ Data
I have asked the Premier to use the opportunity of WorldPride to put LGBTIQA+ data collection on the agenda for the next National Cabinet. The Australian Census of Population is a vital tool in understanding the demographic make-up of the country for planning essential services like healthcare, education, housing and aged care. While it provides data on age, sex, marital status, language, ancestry and tenancy, it does not provide data on sexual orientation, gender diversity or variations in sex characteristics, resulting in a lack of data on LGBTIQA+ communities.
LGBTIQA+ people have poorer health, mental health and wellbeing compared to the rest of the community and detailed population data would help establish effective targeted programs. A resolution at National Cabinet would provide evidence to the Australian Bureau of Statistics that leaders urgently need this data.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics begins a public consultation on topics for the next national census in 2026. You can comment from 28 February to 28 April > HERE
