MEDIA RELEASE: Greenwich calls for alternative way forward for Millers Point

Alex Greenwich, the Independent Member for Sydney, has urged the Minister for Family and Community services to consider an alternative plan for Millers Point and The Rocks put forward by SGS Economics & Planning.

Mr Greenwich said:

“SGS Economics and Planning have taken an independent and common-sense approach to social housing in Millers Point and The Rocks. Their report stresses the need to invest in a local purpose-built facility to house long-term elderly residents of the area, allow older residents to age in place and protect the area’s social mix and history.

"The report emphasises the social and cultural costs to Sydney of removing all public housing from the area and provides compassionate alternatives to the cruel ‘social cleansing’ of this precinct.

The Government has not yet announced their sales process for the area, recent properties sold are largely ones already earmarked for sale by the former government and the current government has made no commitments that proceeds of sales will be to provide additional housing.

I have briefed the minister’s Independent Facilitator for Milers Point on the importance of retaining social housing, and understand he will consider solutions put forward by me, the local community and in the SGS report.”
