My Work as an MP
Listen to my interview with Deborah Knight on the 2GB Pollie Waffle series about my work as an MP, why I stood for Parliament, being openly gay in the Legislative Assembly and what can be achieved > HERE. There’s also an ABC report on the current NSW Independents and our priorities > HERE
Together with seven independent candidates, I have called for reforms that embed climate change in planning approvals. New South Wales has approved 26 coal and gas projects since the Paris Agreement was signed because there is no mechanism to consider emissions in planning decisions. These projects will produce 4.4 billion tonnes of emissions and even more projects are being proposed for the state.
There is enough coal and gas from existing mines to supply the state’s power until the planned renewable energy zones are operating. New coal and gas projects are for export at a time when the world is working to ween off fossil fuels. A business-as-usual approach to coal and gas expansions will only destroy our air, water, biodiversity, food bowl and climate at a time when the impacts of climate change are devastating communities across the state. See the ABC report > HERE.
I have had a strong working relationship with the Honourable Emma Hurst MLC of the Animal Justice Party. She co-sponsored my bills and I have introduced her bills into the Legislative Assembly – together we got five bills passed in the last term of parliament. We are in different houses of Parliament and have agreed to introduce each other’s bills in the next term of Parliament.
