NSW Parliament Calls for Better Treatment of Asylum Seekers

The New South Wales Legislative Assembly has unanimously supported a motion from the Member for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, calling for asylum seekers and refuges to be treated with respect and dignity and declaring that seeking asylum is a human right.

Mr Greenwich said:

“All sides of the NSW Lower House have afforded refugees and asylum seekers with the respect and dignity that current and former federal governments have failed to.”

“The NSW Parliament has reflected the views of various communities across NSW who welcome and celebrate the contribution of all immigrants, including those who have sought asylum and arrived as refugees”

“It is time that the federal government and opposition stop the race to the bottom, and acknowledge the negative health and mental health impacts of their expensive and inhumane off-shore processing policies”
