Outlawing LGBTQI+ Conversion Practices

Outlawing LGBTQI+ Conversion Practices

Members of the parliamentary friends of the LGBTQI+ community Liberal MLC Shayne Mallard, Labor MLC Penny Sharpe, Greens MP Jenny Leong and Independent MP Alex Greenwich today congratulated the Victorian Parliament for outlawing LGBTQI+ conversion practices and are calling for stories from the NSW community about lived experiences with this damaging practice.

The new laws follow similar reforms in Queensland and the ACT and the group of members from across the political divide say conversion so-called "therapy" also happens here in New South Wales.

While there are shocking accounts of attempts to convert LGBTQI+ people, most stories go untold because they occur behind closed doors and are associated with feelings of shame and rejection. Members want those in the community who have been affected to reach out, share their experience in a safe environment and help them outlaw the practice here.

The members have committed to reviewing the Victorian legislation and progressing reforms in New South Wales to protect LGBTQI+ people regardless of their background or upbringing from the trauma and torment of conversion therapy.

People can confidentially share their story by emailing [email protected] or contacting the MPs directly.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
