What we’re doing

Our street trees not only provide beautiful shade, colour and habitat, they’re also a legacy for future generations.

This plan provides a coordinated and strategic approach to future planting. It ensures our street trees provide a green and resilient future.

The street tree master plan is a critical tool to proactively manage our urban forest. Trees like all living things, grow, age and eventually die. It’s been carefully developed to guide our future street tree planting.

Based on community feedback, expert advice and experience

We gathered feedback from our communities, advice from experts, and experience gained during the implementation of the existing master plan to revise and update our street tree master plan.

From 6 July to 3 August 2022 we asked the community for early feedback on the street trees in their local area. This consultation took place while the revised plan was drafted to ensure community input during the drafting process.

We received 559 submissions. We reviewed, and, where appropriate, incorporated this feedback into the updated plan. You can view the outcomes from the engagement below.

Key changes

Several changes were made to the current plan as part of the review process, these include:

  • Development of an interactive online platform to present the complex information in the draft plan.
  • Urban forest resilience and species for a changing climate is a focus.
  • Change of species in 52% of the streets.
  • Overall increase in the use of locally indigenous tree species.
  • Increased use of 2 (or more) species within each street's footpaths (often to provide a mix of evergreen and deciduous species).
  • 3 new planting types (constrained, planted traffic islands, and median strips) and recommendation of species for these locations.
  • Draws from a higher overall number of tree species than the 2011 plan (81 compared to 68 species).

Revised master plan

The street tree master plan consists of several key components. The main element is the interactive map, where you can select a street and drill down to find the species proposed for footpaths, constrained areas, potential planted traffic islands and medians. It also links to wider precinct information that gives you more detail on the environment and characteristics of that local area.

There is an option on the map to select advanced filters. This gives the user the option to use more complex filters such as dormancy, canopy spread, species origin, planting arrangements, common and botanic names.

Strategic context – greening Sydney

Our greening Sydney strategy outlines how we will increase greening across the city and share its benefits with the entire community.

Several supporting documents sit under the greening Sydney strategy. They cover specific areas and support the delivery of the actions outlined in the strategy.

The urban forest strategy outlines how our tree canopy (in streets, parks, and properties) will be managed for the benefit of the entire community and for future generations. This strategy has also been reviewed and is open for community feedback.

This street tree master plan guides our future street tree planting.

The City of Sydney’s tree management and donation policy sets the policy principles for all aspects of tree management in the City of Sydney local area. This policy has also been reviewed and is open for community feedback.
