Rent Reform

Rent Reform

The rental crisis shows no sign of slowing and the government has introduced two early reforms to help ease some of the burden on renters through a portable bond scheme and bans on secret rent bidding.

Bonds can be extremely high with tenants being out of pocket around $10,000 each time they move commonplace, so I strongly welcome provisions to allow the transfer of a bond from one tenancy to another. Tenant advocates however argued that proposals to end secret rent bidding put transparency ahead of affordability by making rent auctions the default position. I worked with my cross-bench colleagues Joe McGirr, the Member for Wagga Wagga and Jenny Leong, the Member for Newtown, and the minister to refer the bill for a quick committee inquiry. I will be on the committee and will not support any changes that will drive up rents further.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
