SCG Stadium Outrage
5 May 2015
The Sydney Cricket Ground proposal to build a massive sports stadium on public land at Moore Park east is outrageous! Media reports indicate that the government plans to take away more parkland for a 65,000 seat stadium on precious parkland.
In March the then Minister for the Environment denied the government had plans to do just this.
Less than a decade ago public recreational land was rezoned for commercial development that could bypass normal planning laws and the SCG built more offices and the NRL headquarters, and cut down mature trees without community consultation. In 2010 the SCG tried to get Moore Park east for a permanent car park but was stopped by a massive community campaign involving residents, community groups, Lord Mayor Clover Moore then also the local MP, Neville Wran, Malcolm Turnbull and David Shoebridge. I’ve called for all sides of politics to put an end to the betrayal of our public parklands. My statement is HERE.
