Sirius Heritage Win
Monday 31 July 2017
The Land and Environment court ruling in favour of Save Our Sirius Foundation and the Environmental Defenders Office is a win for Sydney’s heritage and the community campaign. The court determined that the former minister’s decision not to list the iconic Sirius building on the heritage register did not comply with the Heritage Act and must now reconsider the Heritage Council’s recommendation to list Sirius, determination is HERE.
While this decision does not prevent eviction of the tenants, it shows that the government should take heritage into account. I continue to work with local residents, National Trust representatives and the Australian Institute of Architects NSW to protect this rare and representative example of purpose-built social housing and Brutalist architecture. My support letters are HERE. The community Save Our Sirius campaign continues, information at http://saveoursirius.org.
