Speaking Out Against Latham Bill

Speaking Out Against Latham Bill

On the day of my nine-year wedding anniversary, a report which recommended that the Parliament pass Mark Latham’s appalling anti-discrimination bill was handed down to the Legislative Assembly.

The bill would ensure that someone can discriminate against or vilify someone for their LGBTQIA+ status, marital status or even religion if they claim the treatment comes from a personal religious belief.

I sat on the committee but I was heavily outnumbered by members of the “Friends of Religious Freedom” Parliamentary group, who all voted as a block to exclude evidence showing the negative impacts of the bill.

During debate on the report, I joined with my fellow committee member Jenny Leong of the Greens to call on the house not to accept the report. The government is due to respond by the end of September. My speech: > HERE.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
