Lockout Laws

(Private Members' Statement, 21 June 2018, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

It is four years since the 1.30 a.m. lockouts and 3 a.m. closures were imposed on all licensed venues in the central business district, entertainment, Oxford Street and Kings Cross precincts, and the late‑night economy has been withering since. It is now time to fine‑tune restrictions and make the city an exciting place at night again. The lockout laws provided a useful circuit‑breaker for the then escalating violence and antisocial behaviour associated with late-night hot spots, but they cannot sustainably be retained as standard conditions if we are to have a vibrant and diverse city at night.

Crimes Amendment

(Bills - Second Reading Debate, 19 June 2018, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

The Crimes Amendment (Publicly Threatening and Inciting Violence) Bill 2018 introduces four serious offences into the Crimes Act for publicly threatening or inciting violence against someone or a group of persons on the grounds of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status or HIV/AIDS diagnosis. These offences will replace the serious vilification offences currently in the Anti-Discrimination Act. Everyone has the right to live their life with dignity and peace and without harassment and vilification. For some people, just because they are, for example, Jewish, Muslim or gay, there is always a real threat of verbal abuse or vicious attacks from another member of the public. At best this can be upsetting and at worst someone's sense of safety can be at serious risk.

Destroying Forests

Tuesday 19 June 2018

Logging our State forests is unsustainable. It drives biodiversity loss, pollutes our waters and contributes to climate change. Alarmingly operations are intensifying and traditionally protected areas like old growth forests could be at risk from a drive to supply timber.

Short Term Letting

Tuesday 12 June 2018

Our community campaign got the government to give owners’ corporations the power to ban holiday lets for lots that are not the “principal place of residence” of the host, but this very limited power will do little to stop buildings turning into quasi hotels.

Safe Access

Tuesday 12 June 2018

Last week Parliament passed laws so that women can safely access reproductive health clinics without harassment, intimidation or obstruction. Some anti-abortion activists try to hinder, harass, moralise, intimidate and distress women and staff attending clinics. This is not political protest but an invasion of women’s privacy. Safe access zones cover only 150 metres around clinic entrances and activists will be able to speak out and distribute material on abortion in other public places.

Women have a right get the medical care they need without interference and I supported the bill, HERE.

Women in the House

The law was changed 100 years ago to allow women to stand for and sit in Parliament as MPs. There’s a lighting display and re-enactment of the first female MP Millicent Preston Stanley’s campaign for mother's custody rights Friday 15 June 5-6pm. Free but bookings essential: email [email protected] or phone 9230 2047. Details HERE.

TPP Rally

Tuesday 12 June 2018

The Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network AFTINET is holding a rally 12.30 Friday 15 June at Farrer Place Sydney. The 11th version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership tabled in federal Parliament – it still allows corporations to sue governments over health, environment, consumer and public interest laws. Details HERE.

Safe Access Zones

Monday 4 June 2018

Fair Agenda has a rally Thursday 8.30-9.15am outside Parliament House Macquarie Street in support of the bill to provide safe access zones near health clinics that provide abortion, reproductive health services, cancer screening and other contraceptive services HERE.

I strongly support this reform to ensure any woman can access the health care they need without harassment from strangers over something that only affects her body. I hope that MPs across all parties support the bill.

Historic Anti-Gay Violence

Monday 28 May 2018

ACON’s ‘In Pursuit of Truth and Justice’ report on nearly three decades of homophobic and transphobic violence late last century calls for an independent investigation, a formal apology, a police taskforce to investigate historical gay hate murders and dedicated counselling service for victims and families. I support the recommendations and will press the government for reform. The ABC report: HERE and the ACON report: HERE.
