Waskam - Emelda Davis CRS
(Community Recognition Statement, 20 November 2024, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)
On behalf of the Sydney Electorate I sincerely thank (Waskam) Emelda Davis for her leadership, determination, and the consultative representation she delivered during her time as a City of Sydney Councillor between 2021 and 2024. Emeritus Councillor Davis was the first Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) of diverse Indigenous heritage to serve on the Lord Mayoral governing team of the City of Sydney Council in its 180-year history.
Emelda was and continues to be a fierce and successful advocate for vulnerable communities, Pyrmont, those living in social and affordable housing, and first nations rights and representation. I've worked with Emelda for over a decade, supporting her work to provide recognition and action for Australian South Sea Islanders.
Amongst her many achievements at the City of Sydney, Emelda secured the raising of the Australian South Sea Islander flag over Sydney Town Hall to mark Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day. Every Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, I have been proud to march alongside Emelda, who has also worked to ensure LGBTIQA+ First Nations people get support and awareness. Thank you, Emelda, for your continued leadership, and your enduring legacy at the City of Sydney.
