Gas Transitions

Gas Transitions

Last week following a gas-free barbeque with Parliamentary colleagues I called on the house to establish a roadmap to get the state off gas.

Gas is a dirty fossil fuel driving global boiling. It is now more expensive than renewable energy and has better and cleaner alternatives in every use including cooking, heating and hot water. While Victoria and jurisdictions around the world have started work to phase out gas, New South Wales is allowing connections in new homes to continue indefinitely, entrenching future homes to dirty emissions and future retrofit challenges, especially in apartments.

We need to ban new connections and establish a transition plan to electrify existing homes and businesses with an initial focus on social housing and rental dwellings. We need to also transition away from gas extraction which is increasingly putting our food and water sources and biodiversity at risk.
