NSW’s rising prison population doesn’t reduce crime but has economic and social costs. Aboriginal people are over-represented in jails and more women are being incarcerated with major impacts on their dependent children. We must break the cycle of mental illness, drug and alcohol problems, homelessness, low education, social disadvantage and trauma including sexual assault, that lead to a life of crime and imprisonment. In Parliament I called on the government to increase the focus on early intervention, rehabilitation and restoration. My speech is HERE
