Afghanistan Collapse

Afghanistan Collapse

A number of people have contacted me in distress about the collapse of the democratically elected Afghanistan government and takeover by the Taliban, particularly about what this means for human rights, women’s rights and abuse of minorities.

They’ve been especially upset about the federal government’s failure to make sure that interpreters and others who worked for Australian government military or agencies and their families had been brought to safety.

The Refugee Advice and Casework Service has five steps the federal government can take: a one-off humanitarian intake of the most vulnerable, grant permanent protection to Afghanistan refugees on temporary protection visas, allow family reunification for Afghan refugees, resettle Afghan refugees in refugee camps, and pressure the Taliban for genuine peace and reconciliation.
