Alex's Update Issue 13

Action in Parliament, Harbour North Concerns, Sydney Street Count, NSW Marriage Equality

Last week in Parliament I spoke about the important role of the digital economy and called on the NSW Government to support entrepreneurs with affordable office space and research and development grants to make NSW an Information Technology leader. I also joined entrepreneurs and innovators at "co-working in the park", where may shared their experience and knowledge of start-ups.

I also gave notice for future debates to:
  • develop a Plan of Action for descendants of South Sea Islanders kidnapped to work in sugar cane fields;
  • condemn the Australian Christian Lobby for homophobic comments;
  • commend the Government for HIV/AIDS prevention, awareness, and education; and
  • repair and maintain social housing stock.

Hundreds of people committed to work together against Millers Point social housing sell-offs at a community meeting on Thursday. In Parliament I lodged petitions signed by over 500 people concerned showing the Government the level of community concern. You can download and sign the petition HERE.

My concerns continue over the process – or lack of – for a second Sydney casino at Barangaroo. See my op-ed in last weekend's Sun Herald HERE.

Last night, I went out with hundreds of other volunteers for the City of Sydney Street Count, which tries to track homelessness. This is a perennial concern for the inner city, and I want to understand the situation for people sleeping rough. Information available HERE.

Time is nearly up for submissions to the NSW Marriage Equality Inquiry. Please make sure the Government knows your views. Information available HERE.

Have a great week
