Animal Welfare Win

Animal Welfare Win

Most people don’t realise that about 1,000 dogs and 500 cats are still used in research experiments each year in NSW. When the research ends, most are killed even though there are rescue organisations willing to rehome them, such as ‘Beagle Freedom’ and ‘Liberty Project’.

I sponsored an Animal Justice Party bill in the Legislative Assembly to require researchers to take steps to ensure dogs and cats in their care are suitable for rehoming, such as through exercise and socialisation. When the experiment is over, or after three years unless an exception is given, the bill requires the researcher to rehome the animal or provide them to a rescue group.

The bill had already passed the Legislative Council and we negotiated sensible amendments with the government to get unanimous support. The bill will not stop research but make it more humane for dogs and cats.
