Friday 25 August is Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day, which acknowledges the history of ‘blackbirding’ of South Sea Islanders as slaves to work in Australia, and to celebrate their ongoing culture and community.

Events include the Australian South Sea Islander Flag raising ceremony at Sydney Town Hall from 9am-9.30am > HERE and an Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day event at Redfern Community Centre Hugo Street Redfern 11.30am-2pm, with Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO and Cr Emelda Davis > HERE.
