I’ve asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to strongly oppose the death penalty, amputation, whipping, and stoning to death for adultery and homosexual acts in the new Brunei penal code. Australia must take a strong stance against such cruel and discriminatory violations of human rights. Australians in Brunei, travelling through Brunei or travelling on Royal Brunei Airlines may be at risk of arrest and death and I called on the minister to also protect Australian citizens.
