In response to recent tragic deaths and injuries to cyclists, the Minister for Roads and Freight announced he might require cyclists to be licensed and ban them from some roads.

Cycling takes cars off the road and passengers off crammed buses, reduces pollution and greenhouse gases, and is healthy. Successive governments have concluded that licensing would be expensive and difficult to administer and I urged the government not to introduce anything that would risk reversing recent progress that has seen bicycle trips increase.
