The government is de-licensing the debt collection industry so that anyone can conduct debt collection and repossession activities. This will likely lead to a rise in debt collection agencies, which are not covered by an Ombudsman or ASIC guidelines, and are known to harass vulnerable people who can’t keep up with their bills. During debate I asked the government to follow other states and protect social security payments from direct debt recovery. My speech is HERE.
