Election Funding Review

Election Funding Review

Following a meeting with the Electoral Funding Authority I repeatedly asked the government to close a loophole caused by a December High Court decision which allowed donations from corporations, industrial organisations and peak industry groups without requiring their disclosure. Campaign donations from these sources were banned by a 2011 bill hence the disclosure provisions were not drafted to account for them.

I welcome the government’s new expert panel set up to recommend political donation reform however I am concerned that only major parties are represented on the panel. We need more grassroots community representatives and I am concerned the new system does not make it harder for new independents to raise funds and get elected.
