Gaza
I remain deeply concerned at Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, and many more have been injured, displaced and face starvation. The situation for vulnerable groups like children with no surviving family, people with disability and women is dire. Those trying to flee the war zone face awful circumstances and few options for asylum.
We urgently need a permanent ceasefire and protection of all civilians, with all parties complying with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law. This involves the immediate and unconditional safe release of all hostages, and permanent and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid. We must renew efforts towards a long-term diplomatic solution that ensures both Palestinians and Israelis have a safe home and self-determination. Australia should work with the international community to promote peace.
I support funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA), direct humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and emergency visas for those fleeing the conflict. Palestine Australia Relief and Action is campaigning for the Australian Government to provide safety for Palestinian-Australian families. Australia has a history of providing a safe home for those fleeing persecution and we should include fleeing Gazans in our refugee programs.
The NSW government should provide a support package for people fleeing the violence like South Australia, which will waive international student fees and public hospital costs, give access to dental care and support to access private rentals for people from Ukraine and Gaza.
I believe the Australian government should not deal with arms companies whose weapons are being used in Gaza.
