ICLC’s Safe Relationships Project

ICLC’s Safe Relationships Project

(Community Recognition Statement, 19 November 2019, Legislative Assembly, NSW Parliament)

On behalf of the Sydney electorate, I congratulate the Inner City Legal Centre on 10 years of service to the community through their Safe Relationships Project. Established in 2009, the SRP is a court and legal support service for LGBTIQ people who are experiencing domestic violence or leaving an abusive relationship. The SRP provides a safe room at the Downing Centre, support at other NSW courts and wrap-around legal assistance and non-legal referrals. Along with the Attorney General, I attended the recent fundraiser for the SRP which secured future work with more than $10,000 raised. I’m proud to support this important service. Considering the prevalence of domestic and family violence in Australia, including for LGBTIQ people, the SRP is a vital service. Everyone has the right to safety no matter what their sexual orientation. I thank all those who have worked in the SRP over the last 10 years, commend their efforts and trust that it will continue as long as it is needed.

Let's work together to celebrate and protect our great city!
