Justice Reform

Justice Reform

It’s deeply concerning that the NSW Government did not allow UN Inspectors into our prisons. Australia has ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), which allows UN inspectors to investigate prisons and similar government institutions like mental health facilities and detention centres. OPCAT aims to prevent torture and make justice systems transparent.

I signed the Justice Reform Pledge calling for an evidence-based criminal justice policy that identifies effective alternatives to incarceration and enhances community safety > HERE. We need evidence based policy in criminal justice and prison reform. Australian prisons cost over five billion annually and often that again in capital costs but are badly failing us all.
