Protecting Natural Environment
Together with the new Greens member for the NSW Legislative Council Sue Higginson and my independent colleague Greg Piper, I called on the environment minister to protect hollow-bearing trees in areas subject to logging.
The government asked the Natural Resources Commission to look at ways to protect native flora and fauna in State forests following the devastating Black Summer wildfires. But the recommendation to ensure that at least eight hollow-bearing trees per hectare are retained still hasn’t been implemented. Forty-six mammal, 81 bird, 31 reptile and 16 frog species rely on hollow trees and we urgently need to protect what is left. I have previously called for a moratorium on logging native forests and continue to be concerned that intensive forestry operations are razing the already declining native habitat for vulnerable and threatened species.
