Rental Law Review
The government has opened consultation on reform of NSW rental laws, asking for comment on reasons tenants can be evicted, tenants keeping pets, protecting personal information, transferring bonds to new tenancies and other ways to make the rental system fairer. You can comment until 11 August > HERE
Sydney is experiencing a severe rental crisis and we are hearing from many tenants being hit with astronomical rent hikes. I’ve been advocating for rent increases to be limited to increases in CPI for rent, restrictions on converting rentals into short term holiday/executive accommodation and removal of “no-grounds” evictions. We also need massive investment in new social and affordable housing as a safety net for low income renters to prevent homelessness, and to reduce demand in the private rental market.
You can also make a submission to the Senate Inquiry into ‘The worsening rental crisis in Australia’ by 4 August. The inquiry is examining problems for renters and getting rental accommodation, rising rents and unaffordability and improvements to renters’ rights > HERE
