Senate Marriage Inquiry
Thursday 3 September 2015
Australian Marriage Equality wants marriage equality to be legislated in the federal parliament, but this has been blocked by the Government. The Senate is conducting an inquiry into a public vote on marriage equality. The options for a public vote are a plebiscite to indicate the public's view on the issue or a referendum to change the Constitution. If there has to be a public vote, the preference is for a plebiscite at the next election. A referendum is completely unnecessary and could entrench discrimination in the constitution.
Whatever your views, I urge you to make them known to the Inquiry. Australian Marriage Equality has a simple webform you can complete HERE.
