Standing Up for Forests
I supported a petition signed by over 20,000 New South Wales residents calling for an end to the deforestation of native forests, a plan to transition the forestry industry to sustainable plantations by 2024 and forestry worker protections.
We can’t keep destroying native habitat in our forests for low value woodchip and we don’t need to destroy forests for timber which mostly comes from plantations. We need forests to protect what biodiversity we have left and to act as carbon sinks.
While the government’s response was not promising, the Victorian and Western Australian governments have already committed to transitions and pressure is mounting. I will keep pushing for an end to deforestation.
